The starting point were two basic rules: 1. everything was to be played at once (no overdubs, sequencers etc.). 2. only acoustic sounds. Research and inspiration. It's important to note that solo drum music is not the same as a traditional drum solo. The genre is relatively unexplored. Which is why I have spent a lot of time researching, experimenting and exploring the possibilities with special reference to writing actual songs. Though mainly inspired by Asian traditional music, also Terry Bozzio must be credited for his groundbreaking work and the basic ideas of seeing the drum set as an orchestra within itself, and building songs using ostinatos. As a part of my research I have also listened to Airto Moreira, John Cage, Steve Reich, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, Messiaen and many others. The music is fundamentally thorough composed, however certain sections are improvised. Orchestration. I've tried to give each song a unique sound by using the instruments in many different combinations. About half of the tracks are short interludes, where the orchestration is fairly experimental (cans, bags, candlesticks etc.). | |||
